Some people’s first reaction to the use of a dog kennel is that it is a cruel idea and that you shouldn’t confine your dog. However, the reality is that before dogs became domesticated they lived in dens because they considered them to be a way to keep safe from predators. Dog kennels are just modern day dens and there are multiple reasons to have one.
Due to the fact that historically dogs slept in dens you will often find that they will naturally seek out places that are covered, such as a table, when they want to go to sleep. By providing them with their own dog house you are guaranteeing that they have this sort of space available to them at all times. If you make it comfortable, with a good dog bed then you will soon find that your dog will choose to go there, not just when they want to sleep, but also when they want to just get away from it all.
With a young dog it will also act as an aid to house training as a dog will not soil anywhere near where it sleeps and eats. If you attach a dog exercise pen to the front of the kennel then you can ensure that he will not make a mess of this area either. At regular intervals take him straight from his kennel and pen to a place where you are happy for him to do his business and he will soon learn that this is what you expect.
Another use is to reduce separation anxiety. Dogs don’t like to spend time away from their owner but if they have a place that they consider safe then you can gradually acclimate them to you leaving them for short periods without them feeling scared.
